Self-Advocates of Minnesota
Founded in 2007 by Advocating Change Together (ACT), the Self-Advocates Minnesota (SAM) Network is a statewide coalition uniting self-advocacy groups across the state to promote the rights, leadership, and full inclusion of all disabled people.
SAM provides a space where individuals with disabilities—including those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), physical disabilities, mental health disabilities, and other lived experiences—can connect, learn, and take action to create meaningful change. Through peer support, leadership training, and advocacy efforts, SAM empowers people to speak up for themselves, challenge ableism, and push for policies that support full participation in society.
Divided into six SAM regions, more than 50 self-advocacy groups across Minnesota are connected through SAM. Each working with its member groups to build personal power, connect to the disability rights movement, and create community change. SAM is built on the belief that people with disabilities must be at the forefront of decisions that impact their lives. The network fosters collaboration among self-advocacy groups, amplifying voices and strengthening the movement for disability rights. ACT continues to support, fund, and administer the SAM network and its Leadership Circle, ensuring that self-advocates across Minnesota have the resources and connections needed to lead. Whether through legislative advocacy, community organizing, or personal empowerment, SAM helps individuals develop the confidence and skills to lead the fight for disability justice.
